well, here you can discuss it. in my opinion, communism =/= socialism, because communism applies violence to achieve equality, while socialism (or social democracy) applies political means only.
I disagree on your reasoning. Violence is not necessarily a part of the socio-economic system known as Communism. However, Communism was distinctly laid out as a "Stateless, Classless society" by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, whereas the term Socialism was adapted later to refer to a system where the needs of the society were put before the needs of the individual. In modern usage, Socialism applies to a system where the Government attempts to balance the pyramid, so to speak.
