I'm curious because the lack of working spearwall units is really pissing me off, what did you do, how does it work, and how can I incorporate it in my customly modded game?
what you need to do is disable phalanx special from units (spearwall units).
Then take away their secondary weapon.
Now what will happen is pikes and halberds, without spearwall or secondary weapons are more mobile, fun to use, work better against cavalry, the AI uses them better, they can now be an offensive use instead of just defense.
It makes it 10 times better.

IS it not a good idea to keep spearwall, so making it mixed offensive/defensive unit? Could they not historically be deployed in such a fashion?

This mod is not for historic accuracy, it's for gameplay, and to bring back the dark medieval atmosphere that mtw1 had.
I personally love pikes and halberds when they do not use spearwall, it makes them simply better to use.
But other people like spearwall, it's just a matter of taste.
