Not computer or boardgame, but I really like fire emblem.
The Operational Art of War III, refight Korea in one day! Invade Zimbabwe and remove Mugabe! Refight the great battles of World War Two!
why are people putting galactic civilization 2 so high? granted ill give you that their tech tree system, economic system are probably the best out there, but elsewhere it falls short. the ship system is pretty good but lacks alot of customizable options. however if you gave it a decent minimap battle similation, even something pretty lame, then it would be number 1, but its just not that great. no way in hell any of those games beat out X-com. that is the smack daddy of all games out there.
What exactly is x-com? is it an old game?
Yeah, it would be interesting to see an interview of Sid on this.
X-COM series. I'm sure the talk is about X-COM: UFO Defense, screenshots.
"What? Huh? Oil? Who said something about oil, ***** you cooking?"
"The United States of Space, coz I ain’t stopping at the Moon. Write this down, M… A… R… S… MARS *****es. That’s where we are going, Mars, red rocks!"
Fortress America and Steel Panthers 1,2,3
The old Talonsoft Eastern and Western Front Series.Cracking games and they have just been released for XP and Vista!!!Ordered my copy and its on its way!
(No,i have nothing to do with the Company releasing it either.LOL)
If anyone wants the web adress for the games company,i'll gladly supply it.
Killachinchilla, have you seen and tried out "Highway to The Reich"?A brilliant game on the whole of MArket Garden. Its not strictly turn based but is pretty good any way.
I borrowed Silent Storm and the expansion from a friend of mine last night. I love it, played way too much, very tired this morning hehe. I recommend it if you're a WW2 buff, or just love turn-based in general.
I love the old SSI game, A Bridge Too Far. Its one of those old, cardboard square games, but I love it. Unfortunately its near impossible to find people who play such classics nowadays.
For me Civilization series is number one. But Colonization, Chess and Heroes series are high as well.

I still got copy of this game, but I couldn't make it work on my comp. Could you post a link to their websites ,please?
Also I remeber playing all .... General series when I used to have my old 486 DX33 at Home. I think the first one was Panzer General, followed by Pacific, Fantasy and go on.
Some of my favourites have already been chosen.
The Operational Art of War a Century of Warfare – the best
The Panzer General series – not bad at all…
Civilization was too much generic…
Jagged Alliance – the best at tactical level or maybe
X-com, Jagged is more realistic, specially some mods
And… it is not turn based… but I like Europa Universalis series…
Um dia destes vou mudar a minha assinatura.
Some really great games by SSI.Some are now commanding stupid money. As for board woargames you cant beat Kingmaker or Advanced Squad Leader.
If you still are after old games take a peek at www.secondchancegames.com
I managed to get a copy of S&T "Hell hath no Fury.."
I'll go by series rather than a single game.
X-Com
Silent Storm
Fallout
Civilization
Master of Magic
Galciv
Master of Orion
Panzer General
Jagged Alliance - like the modern silent storm
Other old SSI Panzer General style games.
SSI DND Rpgs like Pool of Radience
Magic Candle - like an ssi dnd rpg but with better combat.
Final Fantasy Tactics and other Japanese tactical turn based games.
And the king:
Emperor of the Fading Suns, the greatest Space Strategy game of all time.
Imagine Alpha Centauri but with multiple planets.... yes... SMAC with multiple planets you heard that right. It had similar gameplay and a storyline similar to Dune where you had noble houses competing to become emperor. Space combat, dynamic isometric ground combat, it had everything. Its like a Paradox game in space.
Its abandonware so you can get it for free, it is a dated game though and a few mods exist. Its from 1997 and it works in windows XP.

Alpha Centauri is a close second obviously
I revised my list, I forgot about many important games. Especially Fading Suns, i replayed that and know its by far the best. If I ever make any kind of game, i can program C++ and Java, I want it to be something like that.
