Thread: For those in New York

Interesting news story for those of you living in New York, or the US 'cause if this makes it, it could set precedent nationwide, you never know:
    Playing by the Rules

New York lawmakers want to criminalize violent video game sales to minors.

    By Ben Silverman
It was 'Game Over' for NY legislators attempting to pass a bill that would criminalize the sale of certain computer and video games to minors, as the current session ended Thursday night before the measure could make it through both houses.
But sure enough, they have some extra quarters. With the two sides of the aisle finally agreeing on the bill's content, it is fully expected to pass muster and be signed into law by Gov. Eliot Spitzer (D) when the session reconvenes in July.
The new bill is a compromise of two different versions proposed earlier this year, one supported by Assembly Democrats, the other by Republican Senators. Leaders from the two houses worked together to hammer out the details of the final proposition, which outlines four strategies in combating the sale of violent video games to underage consumers:
    • Selling violent and obscene video games to minors would become punishable as a Class E felony
    • Console manufacturers would be required to include parental-control devices in their systems
    • Retailers would have to adhere to product labeling guidelines
    • A state-established committee would be formed to oversee and study the issue
Critics of such video game legislation are quick to point out that two of these objectives are already at work. All three current home consoles feature parental-control technology right out of the box, and the ESRB already rates every single piece of certified gaming software prior to release (including Manhunt 2). No one seems to mind the formation of another committee, so long as gamers don't have to attend the boring meetings.
The "punishable felony" issue, however, is sure to raise the ire of the industry. There is currently no fine for selling a violent film to a minor, and even the sale of cigarettes or alcohol merely warrants a small penalty. According to New York's 3 Strikes Rule, three felony convictions are grounds for life imprisonment; irresponsible Gamestop employees could face a Shawshank future.
But not if the ESA has anything to say about it. Having successfully countered numerous anti-video game laws in the past by filing First Amendment suits, the game industry's governing body will surely fire off another one provided Gov. Spitzer signs the bill as expected. If history serves, that could prove costly to the state; a similar bill in Illinois cost taxpayers a cool million as Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D) raided various coffers to fund his ultimately unsuccessful defense.

Lol, it is really "gameover" for New Yorkers. I guess Manhunt 2 really making things pretty badly.

Anyway, I am not sure how to indicate "violence" in video-game; I mean, all video-games have some level of "violence" in there, just like most sports. Therefore if adults said "I want to protect kids from violent influence", does that mean you are going to lock kids at home, no TV and books before he/she turns 18? Face it, human being are violent.

By the way, I feel lucky I don't like Manhunt 2 ; I don't know why but I don't feel comfrotable to play this game.

If New York betrays the video gaming community, we will remember it. We always remember our enemies.

We'll do what we've always done: a) make friends with the people in the store, or b) get our parents to buy the game...

This is wrong. Boys are created with an aggressive, fierce and violent side. It wasn't a bad thing. Society is trying to emasculate boys, because of this new idea that boys and girls are really no different (big lie there).

haha, like me and Spawn when it first came out. The comic store guy down the street said I had to have parent approval so I told my dad and he just bought them for me... my mother did throw a Daredevil out on me for the excessive blood once though...

Also, there was a guy at the electronics boutique in the mall near where I lived before I moved who was in theology school because he wanted to be a priest. This guy would yell at kids looking at the back of games rated above their age and he wouldn't even buy them back from those kids let alone sell them to those kids, even with parent permission. Everytime I went to buy a game there, because they had small comission attached to their sales, I would, as he went to take my game, always demand to sell it through another person in the store. That guy hated me and I hated him... it was a good relationship.

Ah M Rated games are controlled in Indy, ever since 01 or 02 I believe. They even removed some of the more violent games from Arcades.

    Not the worst thing possible.
The only way it's even moderately threatening is the old "slippery slope" argument, but for that it has to be a popular move.

I suggest we throw children into closets, lock the door and not let them out until they are 18. Then they are safe from all violent influence, that could corrupt their innocent brains.

Even that won't work. Boy are naturally aggressive and, well, violent. Its in our nature. Basically what society seems to want is an all girl society. It would be a complete mess as we can see.

How come they aren't making a bigger deal of how the father's porno is being found by 12 year olds and making them obsessed with it?

Thats more serious and cause more mental breakdowns then a violent game imho. Men trying to fulfill their child fantasies when they first saw the porno tape or magazine

It's just something to complain about...

They can form their own unisex, eskimo-kissing, whale, owl and rainforest saving, tree-hugging community that's devoid of all violence whatsoever.

It all comes down to this: The granola-munchers don't actually care about the violence, they just wanna get recognized, it's in their parasitic nature.

For the ones who actually ARE concerned about the violence, they're just TOO stupid to realize that world peace is NEVER going to happen. As long as mankind exists, there will always be war and violence. Period.

Woman in California tried that in the 80's with her daughter- she got thrown in jail.

The deal with that is that their goal is to make it a felony with jail sentences attached if you sell a game to someone younger than the indicated ratings... right now the worst that happens is you just get looked at weird, not put in jail.
