Thread: Books based on Medieval times?

Default Books based on Medieval times?

Are there any books out there (preferably a mix of fiction and non-fiction) that are based during the Medieval time period that are really worth reading? I looked in Barnes and I wasn't really interested in any of them. I am looking for one with a really good plot filled with action and drama and that is also at least somewhat historically correct. One that also deeply focuses on the characters emotions as I like to be able to connect with the characters. Thanks

Timeline by Michael Crichton is a really good book. It is one of my favorites of Crichton's works. The movie was horrendous but the book is excellent.

If you can stand the way the Victorian/edwardian english wrote their prose, Arthur Conan Doyle wrote a couple of novels set around the hundred years war (there may be others but these are the two I've read): The White Company and Sir Nigel. Not sure they'll tick all the boxes you're after but they're interesting oddities if nothing else.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms - based in something of a chinese medieval era and written in the 1700s. Extremely good story, usually it comes in a volume box set as its more than one novel.

It follows the story of several important real life people during the Three Kingdoms era, something like a Chinese civil war, during the 2nd and 3rd century. It is ridiculously good so i'd suggest that over anything else.

Thanks everyone, I am going to check and see if the library has these tomorrow. They all seem like cool books based on the amazon reviews.

Definitely get Maurice Druon's series called "The Accursed Kings" novels. They're excellent, and have great historical facts behind them (and some drama, but it only adds to the story)

    Here's the list of books:
    I. Le Roi de fer (The Iron King)
II. La Reine étranglée (The Strangled Queen)
III. Les Poisons de la couronne (The Poisoned Crown)
IV. La Loi des mâles (The Royal Succession)
    V. La Louve de France (The She-Wolf of France)
VI. Le Lis et le Lion (The Lily and the Lion)
VII. Quand un Roi perd la France (When a King Loses France)

I've only nonfiction and I'd say if you can find some of the Icelandic Sagas or any of Sturlsson's sagas you'll have a good read.

    Anything by Nigel Tranter.

All his historical books are great - some good Viking/Highlander novels.

Do not ignore this guy - you won't regret it.

    Google him.

    Second that.
Also, if you read French it's even better. I've read it in both French and English (English first) and found English translation somewhat weak.

If you like "whodunnits" there's always the Cadfael (Ellis Peters) and Owen Archer (Candace Robb) series of books.

How can anyone not mention Miguel de Cervantes' novel "Don Quixote de la Mancha"?

I cannot recommend this one highly enough:
Wolf von Niebelschuetz - Kinder der Finsternis
English translation: The Badger of Ghissi, by Barrows Mussey, London (Allen&Unwin) 1963.
It's unique in it's language and very immersive, once you got used to the language. It is set in the fictional province of Kelguria, which is actually the Provence and is partly historic (Barbarossa, Cathars etc.) partly fictional. A must-read for anyone interested in books about the middle ages.
