Thread: British or English?

  1. #1

    Default British or English?

Which do you think of yourself as? I'm inclined to say English, but we've achieved a lot as the whole of Great Britain as well.

Well if your from these isles you would refer to yourself as the country your from. But if your a minority say, like I - would say British.

I don't mean what your nationality is; I mean, do you think of yourself as British or English (or Welsh or Scottish for that matter)?

If I'm talking to someone from the British Isles, e.g a Scottish guy, I'll say English.

If im talking to someone outside our isles, I'll say British. If I'm describing myself, I'll say I'm British first and English second.

I say British, but if somebody assumes I'm English (I have a neutral middle class accent with a very slight "roll") I will gently point out I am a Welsh speaking Welshman from the heart of Gwynedd, which generally surprises them.

Anyway, the Welsh (along with Cornish and the Bretons) are the true "Britons" as they were the original inhabitants of the isles (as the Brythonic People, from whom the name British comes). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brython and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brythonic_languages

I actually would say Northern Irish, then British.

But most people would guess I'm scottish with my accent, which I admit does sound slightly scottish.

    Ulster Irish?

By the way, why N.I first and British second? I don't get that guy who said just "Welsh".

That wasn't really my intention, I was trying to bring up an interesting historical point about the origins of the word "British" and to maybe have a slight friendly kick at my more nationalistic countrymen who say "I am not British, I am Welsh!" when the actual origin of the word "British" (Brython/Brythoniaid) was the word these people (the Welsh/y Cymraeg) originally used to define themselves before "Cymro/Cymraeg" or the Germanic "Welsh/Wales".

Sorry, like you I hate all these nationalist guys who go around saying "ZOMGZ I R NOT BRITISH!!!11 I'M WELSH/SCOTTISH/WHATEVER!! GIEV INDEPENDENCE!!11"... I mean honestly.

Strangely enough when people inside the UK are talking about "The British" they're generally talking about the English. Strange really.
