Flinn's rule of thumb n° 225: when you want to say something bad, only hint at it, and someone else will say it for you

But yes I get what you mean, I guess it's mostly a matter of experience.. you said it: "people who have grown up".. that's their reference point, so to say. By the time Harry Potter became popular in Italy, I had read already the Iliad and the Odyssey and Aeneid and most of the Greek and Latin mythology, most of Tolkien's stuff, Brooks, Martin, Evangelisti, Dick and many many others.

edit: I HATE when it goes to a new page. Also, God forgive me, I forgot to mention Howard in my list, probably the greatest fantasy novelist who ever was

Howard? Robert E? I read a couple of Conan short books/stories* a long time ago and for some reason I put it aside. Maybe I underestimated it because of the "brevity" of his work

*No, one was about a "Pict" infiltrating south of Hadrian's wall, great atmosphere.

Yes, that Howard. You need to keep in mind 2 things when thinking about him: first, he died 30 and yet he produced an enormous quantity of works; second, he died in 1936, and was a precursor on many genres and themes.

Then of course, it's a matter of personal tastes.. I've had enough of Elves, Dwarfs and Wizards, and Howard wrote some original stuff that I really like.

I watched the Lord of the Rings trilogy again (seventh time maybe) last week and I found it almost unbearable (and if with this the chat thread doesn't burst with activity I don't know what else to do).

many bad performances (not only Orlando Bloom, even Viggo Mortensen is forced to "act ridiculously" many times), many meaningless scenes (why exactly does Legolas kill Grima when he had already stabbed Saruman several times?), Gimli as a comic character (totally unfunny in my opinion), the representation of elves as ethereal beings with stupid filters and slow motion scenes (excuse my dirty mind, but at one point I I asked my self if elves ed), ridiculous epic speeches (yes Theoden, I'm looking at you)... All the positive things that the movies have (a lot) do not compensate for all this.

Not to mention the infinitely long epilogue that I skipped this last time.

By the way, more generally speaking, this is not exactly about the movie, if my trusted men/nazguls were incapable of killing four hobbits or a simple man, no matter how Numenorian he was, I would have been whipping them for months (and obviously I would have fired them immediately). what an understanding boss sauron

I've been thinking about it this last half hour. Sauron's utter ineptitude. Saruman did more in three weeks than he did in three hundred years. What was that entity doing all that time? hiring mercenaries and raising orcs? video calls with saruman? 99% of the time voyeurism and self-care, 1% of the time planning how to control Middle Earth.

Blame Flinn for the rant. I am a victim of his cunning manipulations.

Seventh edit to this post: Flinn would have been a more effective dark lord than Sauron, clearly

I dont like Gladiator either? (and not because of historical mistakes). I was only entertained by Connie Nielsen's character.

It can't even be said that my intellect played much of a part in my appreciation of the film.

you are too old and disillusioned to enjoy anything vaguely fantasy, or positive in general

All that is left is horror, and porno.. porno actually does wonder, a friend said to me

Lord of the Ring extended editions don't really add much, if anything, to the movies and actively harm the pacing of Fellowship.

After seeing quite a few positive reviews (letterboxd) I decided to watch X-Men First Class this afternoon. I couldn't watch more than twenty minutes. I also watched the latest Batman/Nolan movies again and I found them quite disappointing. On the other hand, I still quite enjoy "nice" cinema (Ozu, Rohmer) and fantasy films like the last Mad Max, or Dune. But you do have a point. And I'd like to think I'm mature, not old
