    Default Unit texture editing

    I've edited the base legion textures by swapping shields from other units but only have green textures over everything except skin when I test them in-game. I'm wondering if it's possible to get away with only editing textures, with paint.net or gimp, or do I have to go into blender and match up any altered unit texture to a model?

    In case anyone else gets stuck in the same way. Decompress the vanilla texture with IWTE V22, edit in paint.net(assuming it is roughly the same) or gimp(personally verified to work), export from gimp in .dds format (compression BC1/DXT1, generate mipmaps, defaults, export), final compression with IWTE. That path allowed me to swap rome city militia shield to the 2 cohort legionary by only editing the texture in gimp.
