Our rail network is very, very old, one of the oldest in the world - thank you, Industrial Revolution - and of course it's impossible to replace any substantial part of it at a time (an entire section between towns, for example, not an entire section between signals) and it's unfeasible to replace it all simultaneously, which means it's impossible to upgrade it much, such as by changing the gauge of the track. It does the job, though; I'm a regular train-traveller and basically, as long as you go with the expectation that it might go wrong and preferably with an open-route ticket you can generally leg it round most stations in time to make it to your destination not that late. Of course, that depends on where you're going; if you need to catch the dog train to Little Nether at 2 in the morning and it breaks down outside Greater Nether you've got problems, but that's another matter.

lol... it amazes me how much this country falls apart with just a bit of snow...

Keele was predicted snow on thurs, rain today and sleet tomorrow. we got snow yesterday, but not much, but today instead of rain the snow returned with a vengeance. we got the heavy snow we were expecting yesterday.... but not a gritter in sight! the campus is currently cut off because the local council hasn't gritted the main road into town, and the buses can't make the incline (keele's top of a hill) on the icy roads... i've seen some interesting cornering going on where i live too....
    how was this not anticipated?

    Dutch trains are the same.
And the Dutch weather is pretty much the same too.

On the walk home I had to walk on the road to stop slipping off the pavement - it was slush without the puppy.

We've been having some pretty cold weather. Around -17 celsisus degrees where I live at the moment, but up north they had -40 celsius degrees some days ago!

Btw, the British aren't the only ones who've been having trouble with trains not coping with weather. Here trains have been late due to the cold.

It’s been -20 C for the last month and we only have about 15 cm of snow. Little bit below average temperture but feels like winter, so I'm fin with it.

Strange, 2 days later than predicted there is a snow storm outside, why couldn't this happen during the week when I wanted time off school!

i thought england would be prepared for snowy weather, here in Ohio, USA, we had 4 inches of snow, and it was -5(F), but we had school, and there was no snow or ice to be seen anywhere on the roads. the only 2 snowdays ive ever had were last week for 2 days, since temperatures were -25 to -30(F) with 20-30 mph winds.

Often doesn't work like that. My snow day turned out not to be one. But I had a Chemistry test, Biology homework and strapping a lash to a single-action SA80 (CCF) which I really didn't want to do in the cold.

    So, I had one anyway.

Jeez inner city schools are getting more and more dangerous huh?

No snow at all in east yorkshire. In west yorkshire its like siberia but oh no, it simply won't travel a little east will it?

First, Snow was confined to Russia and parts of Canada. Then America and all of Canada. Then came England's time. Next the WORLD!

I'm from New England so we get LOADS of snow. Last year my friends and I went to the park and made a whole bunch of nasty $hit. No one went to the park for a while afterwards until someone tore it all down.

    1) 2 snowmen doin' the hanky-panky

    2) 1 snowman standing up and another "on his knees"

    3) 1 snowman "givin' it" to another snowman in the "back door"

    4) 1 snowman wanking

Oh jeez, there were a whole bunch more, but I can't remember all of them, but those 4 I remember clearly.

And GOD DAMMIT, I feel like an idiot - we didn't take any pics!

ANyway, New England hasn't gotten hit too hard this year, which I'm pretty upset about... no snowdays so far. Only about a month ago has it picked up, but we still haven't even had a classic Nor-Easter yet. WHAT THE HELL!!!

One foot of snow on the way tonight, with subzero temperatures following (that's Fahrenheit). The Illinois River ... a major tributary of the Mississippi ... has been completely frozen over for the last three weeks.

I still want to know why the English Conservatives are afraid of the snow!

Rahl, it's all that climatic instability caused by global warming. Everything that happens is caused by global warming. Human-caused Global Warming is the most perfect political theory ever devised by man ...
