Thread: Hard skill level or Expert skill level?

Default Hard skill level or Expert skill level?

I'm playing on hard now and I'm thinking I will switch to expert level but have no clue what will be the effect. Does the skill increase give the AI attack & defense bonuses? I hope not. I know it should get many bonuses like morale and troop numbers which is fine but I just don't want unrealistically strong enemy units killing me off. Has anyone played on expert enough to say how it is? Would appreciate any info.

As far as I know, the main, if not only difference on expert is the bonuses applied to AI troops. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Expert you start with 4000 florins, the computer factions 8000 (rebels always 2000, I'd guess). AI is not holding back at all, and pulls off all available tactics on the battlefield (e.g. feigned retreats).

Okay thanks. I will use expert from now on.

Some of the extra tactics are used on Hard. Hard is where the AI really stops holding back on both the campaign map and battlefield. Expert is where there is no holding back.

Okay I tried the Scots with XL mod on expert and I'm giving the English a well-deserved beatdown. Highlanders are good for chopping people up. My campaign is revenge for what they did to William Wallace. I'm not seeing any AI cheating with the expert setting so I'm gonna stick to expert from now on.

It was a hard choice for me between Irish and Scots. As the Scots I've taken over all the island of England and only had to fight the English twice to do it. The London province was stocking up on troops when their 6 star general switched sides and killed off the King and princes. I bribed the 6 star rebel general with most of his troops still left and got the province with no loyal highlanders giving their lives :tooth: while the French wiped out all the English in France for a tag team finish. On expert level, the stacks of rival faction armies are huge. They seem to average 5 or 6 full stacks in each province with endless fighting going on everywhere. I totally recommend expert level for everyone. The fighting seems fair so no problem there.

I've built up the superstructure and am now pumping out Longbowmen, Highlanders and catapults with a few Scotish spearmen. I want to go kill the Pope cause he sends up to 4 assassins and inquisitors each turn against me but I haven't the navy to do it. My navy is only enough for a local trade network and a small stack to fight off any suprise attacks. The arrogant argonanese are also killing off my generals including a 4 star ex-prince with inquisitors so Scotland is in full-time assassin production just to clear off all the inquisitors and emissaries flooding to my lands. I bought a unit of Korean guardsmen and already a dozen of them have been killed by inquisitors. I will have to fit out all my provinces (except Wales of course) to build ships.

I was gonna upload the battle video from my English fight but I don't see a function to allow uploads.

Build Forts and put Spies into your provinces. That oughta prevent assassinations. And build a load of Assassins and use them all to get the Inquisitors burning your generals (one of them is bound to get 'im).

Ya I was saying how I was building so many assassins that I can't build a navy. The arganese sent in many inquistors including a Assassin Terminator level 6 inquisitor which wiped out a couple of dozen of my assassins including all of my coveted level 4 killers which were defending my provinces from incoming hitmen. Now the argonese are the world power and own all of france, germany and most probably africa too. I noticed the XL makes some spearmen type units (the later models which I dont' know the names of) much stronger than before and almost immune to arrows, even better than swordsmen which is a problem for me cause I prefer swordsmen over spearmen.

yeah, but in battle, the swordsmen would wipe out the spearmen any day. just flank away, and see the destruction.

Swordsmen have no chance against Chivlaric Sergeants apparently. Another strange problem is archers are even weaker in XL than in the original game. For example, I had Welsh Longbowmen and regular archers on a hill and they used up all their ammo firing on both close and loosely packed full size enemy units. The Longbowmen only scored between 20-30 kills each on the scorecard and the regular archers between 2 and 10 kills and this is after having spent all their ammunition. In the original game longbows would be over 60 and the regular archers over 50 in the same situation. This takes the fun out of the game cause it forces the player to only use a couple of types of units and ignore the rest including all ranged units.
