Also concerning the Ducenarius this I cite the following passage in Book (Epistula) II:

"The first Hastatus had the command of two centuries or two hundred men in the second line, and is now called Ducenarius."

This, like other online versions, is Maj. (later Brig. Gen.) T. R. Phillips' abridgement. It comprises only the first three books, omitting Clarke's Bks. 4 & 5 (combined into one book in more modern editions), and excluding some portions of those three books. The complete text is available as a print-on-demand book (a bit indistinct in parts but still useable) and there is a better translation in N. P. Milner, Vegetius: Epitome of Military Science, Liverpool, 1996. See my comments on Clarke's translation and Phillips' abridgement here:

If you are compelled to use one of the online versions, do not be deceived into thinking that it is either a complete or the best translation.

Yeah I didn't say it was complete I could tell it wasnt but it's better than nothing. Just thought it would be useful.

Sometimes nothing is better than something, as I discovered using the awful 1814 translation of Zosimus!

MMFA do not exaggerate!!! No one of us is able to translate Vegetius, it needs a deep knowledge of the Late Latin Language!
I ordered my copy of Flavius Vegetius Reantus (€ 40

) by 'Istituto Poligrafico dello Stato', critical edition, modern and very authoritative transaltion by a great Latinist, o.c. Latin text.

But I'm still waiting for it.......! Our postal service today are worse than in XIX c.!

If your talking about Zosimus it was originally written in Greek, and that's where the original problem arose, the translation from Greek into Latin introduced phrases and words that do not gel with the Greek version.

Do a web search and you will find a free download of both the Latin version of Vegetius and the Greek version of Zosimus

Now I have the book!

Latin text and Italian Translation, Books I, II, III, IIII and V, being this last Italian Edition based on the work of Carl Lang (Vegetius. Epitoma Rei Militaris, Bibliotheca Teubneriana, Stuttgart-Leipzig 1885), who, with the purpose to give more autonomy to the books about the navy, included the last fifteen Chapters of the Book IIII (XXXI-XLVI) in the Chapter V, the Italian Translation is of the year 1984, and from a first look, it seem a very good work.
