Default CA announce free update for Total War Pharaoh, including playable Babylon, Assyria, Mycenae and Troy

Any thoughts on the CA announcement of a free update for Total War Pharaoh - a larger campaign map, playable Babylon, Assyria, Mycenae and Troy, and 150 more units? I'm looking forward to seeing what the additional cultures will be like, and what effect they'll have on the campaign.

    The announcement

    Hello, Total War Community!

We hope the valiant Montu has brought victories to those of you who braved the battlefields of Ancient Egypt, Anatolia and the Levant, while the wisdom of Toth will bolster the decisiveness of those who are yet to thread those ancient fields of destruction.

In January we launched the High Tide Update for Total War: PHARAOH, welcoming the harbingers of the Bronze-Age Collapse, the Sea Peoples, as a new playable culture alongside their two dedicated factions, bringing the core roster up to ten. We were delighted to see your positive reception to this free update which was part of our post-launch ambitions to create a vast Bronze-Age strategy experience.

As mentioned in our Leadership Message back in December, the vision for Total War: PHARAOH since the outset of the project has been to increase the size of the campaign map and introduce even more cultures and ways of engaging in glorious strategic conquest. Today, we’re excited to announce that this will come courtesy of a vast free update that significantly reworks the existing campaign mode already available in PHARAOH’s base-game. This update will usher in a host of exciting new additions whilst also implementing some familiar content from its Bronze-Age brother, A Total War Saga: TROY. We want to improve your experience of this most iconic age, and we’re working hard to deliver it later this year.

In terms of the content you can expect to experience, prepare to embark on a conquest across a map that has greatly increased in size as we add the renowned and highly requested regions of Mesopotamia and the Aegean to the conflict alongside the playable cultures of Babylon, Assyria, Mycenae and Troy. Whilst within the strategic campaign layer, you will have access to all new mechanics such as the Dynasty system which adds mortality and succession to the faction leaders’ quest to leave behind a legacy that will survive the ages. And finally, within battle you can expect over 80 new units for the Mesopotamian factions, alongside the addition of over 70 reworked units from a Total War Saga: TROY.

Given that this update will make some big changes to the way in which Total War: PHARAOH plays, we will be taking steps to ensure that you still have the choice to experience the original campaign should you wish to. We’ll reveal more information on how this will be achieved in a later instalment.

On another note, we’ve made it clear that we’re keen to improve the level of transparency we exhibit across all our products to ensure that you have a better understanding of what we’re working on, as well as how and why we make certain design decisions. With this in mind, we want you to come on this Bronze-Age journey with us to help us begin to find the right path to a greater developer-community collaboration.

Starting next week, we'll be kicking off a series of conversations around the creation of this update, starting with a deep dive looking into the expanded campaign map and how we're aiming to bring this long-lost world to life, before inviting you all to send us your questions for a Q&A session the following week.

Every couple of weeks, we'll have a new topic featuring a variety of voices from across the project, first detailing how we're approaching the work, and inviting you to share your thoughts and feedback on that vision. We'll then come back to you the week after to dive into more detail on the topic over on the official Total War Discord - so make sure you join today and keep an eye out for new channels to post your hotly anticipated questions.

Thanks again for your support, and for your candid feedback - we want Total War: PHARAOH to be an incredible experience for everyone!

Overall, this is positive news, because it shows that they are committed in some form or another to Pharaoh TW. Especially after they cancelled and refunded the Collectors / Limited Edition, forget the name of it, which meant that future content packs (paid DLC) were effectively cancelled.

And yes, finally, we're getting an expansion into the Greek area. So a possible unification with Troy might be in the works?

Honestly, this has piqued my interest. Imo a true Bronze age collapse game should encompass the map from Greece to Elam.

None for the moment, I assume we will get screens and information soon about this. Good sign though, I played today some Pharaoh and became a bit more interested in it than before.

They have also added a number of new factions:

TOTAL WAR: PHARAOH - DEV UPDATE – NEW CULTURES AND FACTIONS
We’re making some big gameplay additions with the Total War: PHARAOH update, and in few places is that more evident than our approach to playable factions. As previously revealed, we’re adding the highly requested regions of Mesopotamia and the Aegean to the conflict alongside their iconic and ancient cultures of Assyria, Babylon, Mycenae and Troy. That means you’ll get to wage war with the most influential forces throughout the region, with each bringing their unique cultural, religious and political identity.

But, that isn’t all. In a move inspired by past Total War titles, we’re also adding an additional 25 playable Minor Factions spread amongst each of the cultures both new and old. These Minor Factions represent an opportunity for us to feature a wider array of Bronze-Age civilisations, kingdoms and tribes in the game, further adding to the roleplaying potential of our sandbox campaign and providing a greater degree of gameplay variety.
    And some changes to battles:

TOTAL WAR: PHARAOH - DEV UPDATE - BATTLE UPDATE
Therefore, we’re introducing a new feature to Battles called ‘Lethality’. This new statistic gives an entity a percentage chance to kill an enemy entity in one successful hit. It works for both melee and ranged weapons and will be factored into all successful hits. However, the Lethal Blow chance will be reduced against higher armor values, as they naturally have a much greater degree of protection than their less armored counterparts.
Missile trajectory is an essential component to landing a killing blow upon the enemy, so we’ve done some extensive work to ensure that they interact and look more realistic. With the new update you’ll be able to use a new functionality which allows Missile Units to dynamically switch between more arcing shots that can travel further but deal less damage and more direct shots which reduce range but deal a lot more damage and are significantly more lethal. This helps us to better reflect each missile weapon’s historical usage and, along with the new Lethality system, differentiate their gameplay purpose and open new tactical options for players to utilize in their battles.
In Mesopotamia, we are adding over 60 new battle maps. Based on player feedback requesting larger battle spaces, the catchment areas for the new land battle maps have been expanded to 6x6 tiles (previously 4x4), with each tile keiryou 256 x 256 meters, resulting in a total map size of 1536 x 1536 meters for each new land battle map.
We are also adding the city of Babylon as a unique major settlement, which we tried to make as historically authentic as possible.
For the Aegean region, we are reintroducing many of the battle maps from TROY, but the majority have been reworked to fit the PHARAOH narrative. All major and minor settlements now feature the new multiple-point victory system.
We've also widened the walls to ensure smoother troop engagement and allowed for sapping and undermining in line with PHARAOH's mechanics. Additionally, the walls have been adapted to work with PHARAOH's ladder system.
We have reintroduced the battle maps for the cities of Troy, Mycenae, Thebes, and Athens.

I'm looking forward to trying the new playable minor factions, and seeing the new regions and battle maps.

CA said that they were going to deliver the update "later this year" - and Kendji said "There was a recent Discord Q/A. End of Summer at earliest, but they made no promises bc they want to do the map justice." I'm wondering if anyone has heard anything more specific.

    Thanks for posting the video!

As the Dynasties Update for Total War: Pharaoh will be released on July 25th, 2024, more people might soon be playing the latest historical Total War game for the first time.

New players can find it challenging to get enough food and to defend against the Sea Peoples invasions, so the TWC Wiki offers new pages - a guide to managing resources (including food) and an introduction to the Sea Peoples invasions.

You can also find our pages on the current 10 playable factions, linked from the Total War: Pharaoh main page.

A new development update introduces the gods, royal courts and ancient legacies of the Aegean and Mesopotamian factions, and the Dynasty system (the family tree), and other changes.

Since Dynasties seems to be an entirely separate game, does that mean I can uninstall the original TWP without detriment to it?

That's right, Pharaoh Dynasties works as a separate game. You can uninstall the original game and play Dynasties.
