I'd be more satisfied if devolution was abolished entirely.

If not, independence for England, and we'll just reconquer Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The fact that Labour lost in England yet we are still cursed with these socialist fools because of our celtic fringes is annoying to say the least. The only consolation is that Labour have shot themsleves in the foot - Wales and Scotland had been a bastion of Labour support prior to devolution; so no matter how well the Conservatives did in England they could always wield a disproportionate amount of power in the Commons. However, with devolution they have given Plaid and the SNP the platform needed to prove their credibility - and now the traditional Labour strongholds are under threat by a menace Labour has themselves created. And it "little Englander" that picks up the bill.

Absolutely spot on Kleos. Absolutely spot on.

Hopefully this is the beginning of the end for Labour. In the next general election the SNP will no doubt take the westminister seats off Labour in Scotland, along with Cymru nibbling at the edges in Wales. I can only see the north of England providing any sort of base for Labour thereafter.

Labour will be forever known as the party that killed the union. I hope to see Gordon Browns face when that joyful day comes.

We should have done it! Anything but withdraw simply because we were being threatened by the US. Eden should have stuck to his guns / rant

No...Dont do that...dont take the dream away...

But in all seriousness, I would have preferred to go down fighting. And Suez isn't the only chapter of our post Imperial decline...the betrayal of Rhodesia should be something all British should be ashamed of.

@ King Edward, I'm for a Union - but not the quasi-federation bollocks New Labour has doomed the Union with. I'm becoming increasingly militant on this subject - either return the Union to how it was, one united nation or break it up. Either would benefit England - and the latter would be a great reality check for Wales, Ulster and Scotland.

The irony is, as with Ireland, after gaining "freedom from the English", they would submit themselves to the EU; no complete control over immigration policy, trade policy, monetary policy, taxation policy...the bitter-sweet fallacy of "Celtic" pride!
