Live countdown... What will be next after Rome 2 and Attila?
Beat me to it :P
Quite curious, it's the new historical TW!
Total War: Three Kingdoms. They apparently messed their announcement live video.
EDIT: now I see I had posted the same video Noif linked in the OP, my mistake :pQuote:
Announcing a new Total War era...
The year is 190CE. China is in turmoil. The Han Dynasty crumbles before the child-emperor. He is but a figurehead; a mere puppet for the tyrant warlord Dong Zhuo. It is a brutal and oppressive regime, and as Dong Zhuo’s power grows, the empire slips further into the cauldron of anarchy. But hope yet blossoms.
Three heroes, sworn to brotherhood in the face of tyranny, rally support for the trials ahead. Scenting opportunity, warlords from China’s great families follow suit, forming a fragile coalition in a bid to challenge Dong Zhuo’s remorseless rule. Will they triumph against the tyrant, or will personal ambition shatter their already crumbling alliance and drive them to supremacy?
The crucible fizzes. Allegiances shift. The fires of conflict stoke opportunity. Only one thing is certain: the very future of China will be shaped by its champions. Total War: Three Kingdoms is the next major historical strategy game in the award-winning Total War series.
TOTAL WAR: THREE KINGDOMS!
We got China!
Middle Kingdom: Total War
Bingo! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Gamestar.de dropped the ball, so CA released the video as there was no point in keeping it for tomorrow. I wasn't actually expecting an announcement so early in the year.
Pretty ignorant when it comes to Chinese ancient history and the dynasty struggles. Can one expect this to be a similar Shogun-esque type of game?
The Chinese market is simply too juicy to just continue to ignore it. Personally, I can't really get started with the scenario, since its an entirely Chinese civil war without foreign involvement. Also too close to the Rome II and Attila timeframe for my taste.
Yep, and Hader just posted a FP announcement about it. ;)
I hope they don't focus too much on the duels
They use the formations more extensively than in previous titles; they were quite important to Chinese warfare (and its military treatises) at the time
And, lastly, do not pursue Lu Bu
Was hoping for a Renaissance/early Age of Exploration myself and can't say I'm very excited for this but Shogun II did even less for me and I enjoyed that so I'm at least a bit curious.
So according to this map, Korea and parts of South East Asia should be part of the campaign map, too.

edit: it's probably rather him:

Thank god it's not another Europe-focused TW. I'm so :wub:ing sick of those.
I realize a big portion of TW's fanbase is from Europe and CA want to appeal to them, but jeez, enough is enough... They practically covered every important era of Europe pre-WW1 (Which is boring trench Warefare than nobody wants... Hopefully)
I'm glad this exists.
I just hope they completely ditch the Warscape engine. "Duel" animations are no longer acceptable.
Waay less factions than Shogun, so expect a more focused experience.
It's really not CA's fault that Europe/Eurasia was the epicenter for nearly every major historical conflict over the last 2,500 years. I can't see them ever escalating into the 1900s gameplay wise either.
Personally I'd of loved Empire 2/Victorian TW. The last two historical titles (R2 and ATW) have been fairly similar combat wise to the timeframe of TW:3K (new acronym?) which were quite terrible with the current engine, so I'm little burned out on the melee based combat with Warscape.
Empire was completely new territory for CA and a very ambitious title that did a number of things well, whilst still being fairly buggy. I think it's gotta be in their pipeline for a proper remake.
Very disappointing. Melee is fun, but there are fans of gunpowder age also.
The best we can hope for now is that by 2019/2020 Total War Saga releases a gunpowder title.
Thank God for the Lordz Modding Collective and NTW3 mod for NTW. Unfortunately ETW is such a broken game there aren't many mods that can improve on it.
Very sad day, especially when there are no competing companies to give my purchasing dollars too.
More gunpowder will be adapted by the Saga series, I am not worry about that :D
>we actually got a China total after all these years

Was hoping for the Renaissance myself, but this is excellent.
Can we try to be reasonable with this one and not scare everyone new away with boundless amounts of bile until the discussion forums are left a wasteland? For the good of the forum and all.
Are we really that scary...
All things considered though, one has to wonder if they'll incorporate some sort of fantasy hero/dynasty warrior esque elements from Warhammer into this title, despite being their next "historical" release. From what I've been reading today about the 3 Kingdoms, it seems somewhat fabled as far as Chinese history goes. Granted I'm extremely light on any knowledge pertaining to this time period.
I really loved this an announcement by The Creative Assembly. I agree with early posts here, that we have seen Europe many many... times and now we jump to a new area, China. Another thing, what I like very much. It is a first historical total war game, that uses the 64-bit engine as I have new PC high-end build. China era is also my favorite as I have traveled and lived in China and have a big interest in their history and culture.
Also, this new historical era can offer more DLC chances (There are many historical events in China), even bring a gunpowder and first world change's technology.
Isn't Britannia being released in 64 bit unless you mean "major" title?
The trailer reminds me of this movie.
what a disapointment
I honest to god would have hated and not bought another european total war. I say it a lot but it's true, I'm sick of the map and the units and the most fun I've ever had with TW since Medieval II was Warhammer II. I was never, ever going to buy Thrones of Britannia or the Roman DLC, and I would have absolutely loathed a Victoria or Pike and Shot era game.
China is not my first pick, but it's a good enough pick to make me want it.
I think 1,000 years between the two time frames might be a bit vast for DLC potential.
Just curious, but if Europe isn't your cup of tea, and East Asia isn't your first pick... What other major historical conflict are they suppose to touch on outside those geographic areas? American Civil War?
It isn't my cup of tea, no. Don't want to sound like I hate european history, I just care veeeery little for it. I'm fine with whoever does, but we've had seven games. Honestly dude? I would have settled for any non-european setting, 4 years ago I remember complaining a lot about how modders just kept remaking the same mods under different rulers, Roma Surrectum, Europa Barbarum, stainless steel, realism tw, etc. and god knows how many other "settings" that only differed from the main title in that they were just more historical, and this was when one could make entirely new maps.Quote:

Gah, sorry for the tangent, I am just very happy with this news, but my personal picks would have been thusly:
Aztec Total War
Inca Total War
India Total War
China total war
Any period would have been fine so long as the focus on the region was there.
Perhaps on paper, but in praxis a Dschinghis campaign dlc would pander to an extremely wide non-chinese audience and would therefore encourage many people who are otherwise not that interested in the core campaign to buy the game. And if it's not Dschinghis I could still see a Tang campaign settled in the 7th and 8th century.
Quite disappointed, I was hoping they wouldn't do China. Not hating, just not my personal preference, but there's still MODS for older TW and Sagas to keep me entertained. Will still try this out eventually. I'm am curious to see what they do with a new engine though and how the battles turn out.
Was hoping for a Victoria Total war personally.
Finally a Total War game in China, being extremely happy about this! I am interested in Chinese history and culture, will be living there for a short while soon. After seeing the series on YouTube, I have anticipated for a good Three Kingdoms based game for a long time. It's been my view that the period would fit Total War extremely well and now it is happening. Wonderful news to me
:thumbsup2
When I get my computer fixed I will say more but right now I will just say thank God for CA doing something diffrent for once and going for a previously untouched setting in total war.
So in summery Oriental Empires with real time battles :)
Loking forward to it. I just hope the campaign mechanics are as good as the battles in this historical title
A Chinese perspective on history differs from a modern Western one. In many respects it is similar to the Victorians, in tending to view historic figures with a certain romantic framework. Whereas Europeans today, often look to see historical figures in a more critical and realistic context, to the extent of purposely deconstructing any heroic imagery that has developed around them. The Three Kingdoms period is a good example of this. A famous fourteenth century novel, "The Romance of the Three Kingdoms", described the Three Kingdoms period as one of romance, heroism and chivalry, and in many respects this is how it is still perceived in popular culture. But it was not romantic for those who lived it, being one of the most bloody periods in China's history.
I'm thinking then that with a Chinese market in mind and the introduction video, the Total War game will probably lean more heavily on this imagery and build upon the development of the central characters as action heroes instead of gritty realism than has previously be done before, but I could be wrong. However, providing it doesn't turn into something akin to those Chinese action movies and strategic battles remain the core focus. A Total War developed on Chinese history is welcomed and provides a good context for an entirely new game.
Remember that China was the home of the great strategist Sun Tzu it is fitting that Total War base a campaign on the place of his birth, if not the time.:thumbsup2
Yeah, that is something i'm not looking foward too but understand. I don't mind personally if there is a bit of a fantastical element to it, but I'd rather it be kept to a minimal and be largely aesthetic.
I predict the expansion is going to focus on the Warring States; it's closer to the fall of Han (meaning less must be spent on graphical details), and is quite a memorable name. Genghis Khan is quite memorable as well, but it's a millennium apart, and, well, during Temudjin's life most of the action was outside China proper. He only completed the conquest of Xia in life, altough Jin was soon to fall. But I'd love that as well, starting getting the command of the Khamag, uniting the five Khanliqs, and how everything from there is tied to quite personal events (like the campaign against Khwarazmian Empire was sparked due to the arrogance of the governor of Otrar, Inalchuq, who sacked the caravans Mongols sent westward, or how the mongols attacked Xi Liao because Kushluq fled there and usurped the kingdom).
I also enjoy more when you can interact with different cultures, which isn't quite possible in the Three Kingdoms Era. We'll probably see Wu Huan mercenaries (fighting for Yuan Shao), the Di on the west frontier, and the Yue peoples of the south, but that's most of it for the initial map I bet.
It looks like the predictions I've been posting several times on this forum are coming true. The Warhammer era of Total War has and is going to irreparably change the artistic and design philosophy of the development studio. The trailer is throwing up all sorts of redflags, one being the clear indications that it will be hero-oriented combat, moving away from the more 'battle simulator' gameplay. It also appears as if they've let their artistic license meander away quite a bit, it feels like there will be a lot of fantastical depictions and art-styles in this one. I imagine the special abilities buttons will be implemented galore too, to the expense of the maneuvering gameplay focus that older titles did so uniquely well. This is a regrettable change of path for the studio for those of us who dream of a battle simulator game that at least tries to be historical and realistic. I'll still give them the chance to prove me wrong, but at this point I'd wager I'm correct.
As a fan of history and having almost no interest in Warhammer (never played), I think I'll prefer this following a slightly fantastical/heroic theme. Magic and excessive rpg are turn offs but if it's not presented 100% historially accurately then the suspension of belief isn't quite as damaged when it doesn't feel accurate. If we're getting lords and heroes in battle, like Warhammer, I don't feel as bad when battles are blobby slaughterfests like Attila.
Ugh but I think we saw this coming a mile away. Not an exciting direction for the historical franchise IMO. At least Rome 2 got some love with the last patch and we have the awesome modding support from DEI.
Yup. Have said and thought the same thing many times the past few months. Historical titles from here on out will basically be Warhammer with some light historical overlays - i.e. a focus on developing your "hero" and their skills as they mow down legions of non-hero enemies. It's a totally different direction for the franchise.
I think the most important question is who is composing the music?
I want Jeff Van Dyck. He nailed it in Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom.
And hopefully the voice acting will be in Chinese and not accented English. Even if it has errors like in Shogun 2's Japanese.
I do agree with others that I hope the actual game will not feel like a Warhammer reskin and that the hero's abilites will be toned down and not take center stage over the historical battles.
This too. I liked what I heard in the trailer but I really hope they are not again using beddow because that guy only ever makes one or two memorable battle themes. I especially would not have any faith in him making a soundtrack with an Asian theme and with TOB already on the way I see no reason why they would overwork him.
Hopefully they get Dyck back or at least someone new to finally start giving soundtracks more memorable then the past titles made after Shogun 2.
You speak my language. I'm trying to be positive about this, it does look incredible graphically. The setting isn't Europe for a change. However, I'm disappointed that it seems to be little more than warhammer reskinned.Quote:

I'm excited about this. As someone who has read the novel many times over and then read the historical biographies, I cannot wait to find out more.
Right now my biggest question though is it more accurate to say this is a game based on historical events or is it based moreso on the novel? The end fight looks to be the 3 brothers vs LuBu, which would indicate the novel is the primary source. This is a big deal for those wondering about the influence of heroes, because if it is drawing from the novel hero abilities will probably be the biggest factor in battles.
For those who aren't up to speed on the events in question but don't care to read up on it, KOEI makes some decent strategy games based on this era. Google "Romance of the Three Kingdoms KOEI." Same source material as Dynasty Warriors, but complete opposite in terms of gameplay. They alternate releases between a light grand strategy type game and strategy RPGs. Some games you are only able to control forces (a la Civilization or Paradox games), others you may control any officer in the game.
I myself cannot wait to bring about a long lasting Wei dynasty.
Well I tried to make a mod for this era back in the day. This will be very hero based in my opinion, with the fact there are so many characters as the real focus of both the story and history as well. I am fairly well read on this era, my forum name
probably gives that away.
One thing i will point out is that the game starts in 190 and will probably last for roughly 100 years with the fall of Wu and establishment of the Jin empire. Although it's titled as 3 kingdoms, the first 30 years from 190 contain way more than 3 factions, wether those are playable, or some of the surrounding tribes like the Xiongnu will have to wait and see.
If you like historical battles there are plenty as well.
For those of you/us concerned about arcade-style battles, I suggest the new Field of Glory II game. It's based on tabletop wargaming but feels very historically accurate and puts a lot of emphasis on maneuvering.
I'm looking forward to this title, as it'll probably not be covered in a poop and plague-colored filter like Attila and the Warhammer games.
China doesn't interest me even remotely, I'll skip this title, this is sad, I had some hope in a XIX century title, or myabe even a Pike and Shot game, sadly the gigantic Chinese market has decided the direction taken by the company, SEGA is the Big Boss and CA obeys, so, I understand their choice even though I deeply disagree.
The only good news is that there is a new graphic engine, finally! I'm asking for a new engine for years and years now that it comes .. I'll loose it!
The worst news is that in my opinion they will stay in China for at least 3 years, with other boring Oriental expansions and tons of DLCs, so I fear that for what's concerning me, Total War Saga is over once for all.
I'd rather buy Warhammer than this. The only reason for me to purchase TK would be if CA decides to include some sort of in-game martial arts fighting simulator or anything like that, considering there is much discussion regarding the increased importance of hero units. /sarcasm
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
I feel rather mixed about this. I don't know much about ancient China, but I am glad they are returning back to history...to some extent.
At the same time, I question that faith with history. I can certainly tell that the trailer was highly stylized. I can't help but feel that this was aimed at the Chinese market, going by what I have seen with Chinese movies. I recall that Shogun 2 was also quite stylized, but it was still rooted in a sense of reality, and that stylizatino was only enough to immerse you in the Japanese setting. I find the Chinese kung-fu movie style to be excessive and rather tacky.
In addition to that, I am concerned by gameplay considerations. I get the impression that we are only getting to play the three kingdoms and possibly the "evil" tyrant. Of course, once one of the "good" kingdoms wins, it seems likely they will have to fight the rest, which all sounds rather formulaic to me. I question the gameplay diversity since all the kingdoms will be of Chinese culture, and I wonder about the presence of bordering cultures like Tibetans and what part they might play (if any). I suppose this will not be too different from Shogun, but those games presented many different clans to play. I can't imagine only being allowed to play 3+1 factions only will provide much replayability.
This does look interesting. I have no particular interest in Chinese history, but I would much rather have this than another campaign with somewhat civilized/settled Germanic barbarians taking on slightly more barbaric/migratory Germanic barbarians. I will follow this game's development and if it looks promising enough - I'll end up getting it. I do hope that there will be some kind of nomadic/steppe-like factions in the north and/or west. I'd definitely get it then :D
My only worry...that trailer, especially that three-way fight, looked very (need I say it?)....BADASS! Cmon CA, please stop doing this....and just make a history game.
I guess there will be quite a few of us who will be disappointed by a major TW title being devoted to China. That's legit, but I suppose this is why CA started the Sagas project - to every once in a while give us more familiar settings for campaigns while they play their BADASS fantasies with Warhammer and now 3KTW :)
If this game starts in 190CE, then faction count isn't going to be a problem. The three kingdoms aren't even close to being formed at this point. The land was heavily fractured between warlords who stood at the head of family networks, some big, some small. While the three families that would eventually form Wei, Wu, and Shu are the most famous, in 190, it was anybody's game. All CA has to do is pick from the many runner ups who could've formed a state if history had gone a different direction before the three kingdom split became finalized.
It was SHOGUN 2 where they started dabbling with Legendary lords and heroes, so it's not like that hasn't been done before in a historical title. SHOGUN 2 also relies heavily on what you are "predicting" to come true, in every way. I'm sure it will be most like SHOGUN 2, with more in depth RPG focuses, especially with how they showed each hero in the trailer. On top of that since the game will probably not be too culturally diverse, faction traits (and the lords themselves) will be the major way(s) they differentiate each faction. I would wager your "prediction" is spot on.
I am glad it isn't going to be another near reskin of ROME 2/Attila. I'll admit after watching the thrones of Brittania Alfred trailer I was fairly disappointed because of how samey the game shown in the trailer is going to feel and look to Attila - which got VERY boing very fast aesthetically. I don't think I was necessarily wanting a Chinese Total War though. I know literally nothing about Chinese lore or history in anyway and can't say I have a huge interest in learning other than a few wikipedia articles. I would have probably preferred something that had to do with the New World, or I agree with someone else here an Empire 2. I'm sure it'll still be good for those of us who enjoyed SHOGUN 2/Warhammer, but I am betting a lot of the real historical/simulator fans will be disappointed.
There is a reason why CA conveniently skips the Rise of the Caliphate era... Despite being one of the most significant periods in history (The fall of the Sasanians and the massive Byzantine decline) with a multitude of epic, history changing battles and legendary commanders (Khalid ibn Al Waleed)
Can you guess why?
Hint: It's the same reason why not even a single mod in here covers that era.
Well I lost my trust in CA/Sega with Rome II, so'll probbaly not buy it anyway, but..
I am among the ones who appreciates a non-European TW. That being said, the Romance of The Three Kingdoms is not what I would prefer. I'd rather see a big campaign that includes more cultures (like the All Under Heaven mod). But I guess with 3 simultaneous TW projects, it's foolish to expect another large scale setting without CA being totally lost (like Rome)
This could be somewhat interesting if they heavily focus on RP/narrative on the campaign side of things. But like others I expect it to be cheesy hero stuff with fluffy magic abilities.
Actually I am a bit curious regarding this. The biggest thing that irked me about Attila is that CA imagines that history fans are more interested in minor Anglo-Saxon/Germanic conflicts on the edge of the known world as opposed to the massive and world-defining conflict taking place between three superpowers in the East. I love Attila, but I felt as if I was playing the same game over and over again with each new campaign DLC.
You ever tried my mod? Might have helped to bridge the time...
Can't wait to conquer China with Cao Cao
well, people tend to be more interested in the history of their own people, than the other end of the world, and the largest video game marked used to be a extremely anglo-saxon one
that said, Anglo Saxon Britain IS a damn interesting scenario!
I am glad however, we get to see a new Era for a change :)
Will probably wait this one out. Going by the trailer it looks like a stereotypical Fantasy of the Three Kingdoms game. I would've been curious if it was more grounded in realism, as perhaps that could've been an interesting way to learn Chinese history. But I'm no fan of the RPG-centred aspects of TW games (even though I like Warhammer). I feel like they're diminishing the importance of real tactics and instead inflating choice of equipment andnon-player factors such as XP, character skills etc.
Also, I can't help but feel that we have played this game before. CA has not pushed their franchise into a new, challenging historical setting for a very long time. Instead, we have been stuck with bows, spears, swords and axes for I don't know how long. Sure, they goofed up on E:TW, but at least they tried, and Fall of the Samurai was an excellent gunpowder game built on the experience from E:TW and N:TW. It's time CA, push the timeframe. Accept the challenge and give us new mechanics.
Precisely for those reasons I would have much preferred a Total War: Victoria. They could have stopped just shy of World War I if they were afraid of that challenge, meaning that the line infantry and skirmish mechanics of past gunpowder games could have been preserved. What is there not to love about the industrial era? Guns, explosions and pre-dreadnoughts on the high seas would also have sold well.
Oh well, maybe next time.
One of my dreams was Medieval Total War 3, sadly SEGA has taken another direction ..
Excuse me? What exactly are you implying here? That CA and mod makers for Total War are racists? Ridiculous assertion.
I think there are just more interesting conflicts that a mass audience in the west would know of and are taught about. That's why they cover fairly well known periods, on top of being based in the UK. I think the wen't with something like Thrones of Brittania for the period being popularized recently by things like The Last Kingdom and Vikings series. The hype. They have had middle eastern and muslim factions (in particular) featured heavily in Medieval 2 and the Crusades. I think something incorporating these Muslim factions into a medieval world again in general would be a much better choice for an era, but even that might be getting very stale at this point. I think something in the 16th century + would be better, for a new take on historical combat, and a change of scenery featuring maybe the new world, Africa, India again. A well redone Empire would be great - especially with how they are dabbling in merging giant campaigns in Mortal Empires.
Finally a total war game i can be excited about. That's fantastic news.
This is Total War going back to its core. I understand some people enjoy the gunpowder age but we've already had that with Empire, Napoleon and Fall of the Samurai. It was time for a new era that fit in the Total War concept perfectly. The size, the scale, and the variety. All perfect.
With regards to the scene, it was supposed to be 3 v 1 with Liu Bei, Zhang Fei and Guan yu against Lu Bu alone. The 三英战吕布 (Three heroes against Lu Bu)scene was one of the most prominent action in The Battle of Hu Lao Guan (which is unfortunately fictional) in the novel.
Not rascist, no.
Their core audience are European and people from European decent, and by extension Christians. Hence why a Rise of the Caliphate era won't go well. It's basically the golden age of Islam and perhaps the darkest age for Christianity. A lot of Christians and/or Europeans aren't keen on the idea of a game that focuses on that era. See: Lack of mods from the community about that era.
CA knows what their audience wants, that's why the vast majority of their games focus on European conflicts.
And it's why games like Shogun and Three Kingdoms are such a refreshing change of pace.
No way is religious tolerance is the issue here. They have had multiple games focusing on many different religions that involve both sides. I do not think Rise of Islam or whatever has ever been "popularized" to the extent something Like SHOGUN or even Three Kingdoms are for a non euro-centric game. Yeah, sure maybe why it islam hasn't been taught or covered as much in the past is because of that, but there is no way that is why CA isn't covering it. Also, I am pretty sure I have seen mods focus on the middle-east like: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/forum...roken-Crescent
Cool. I didn't see it last I checked.
I don't think Europeans/Christians have long standing religious animosity with other religions besides Islam, and maaaybe Judaism. And you should check that mod out... It's not really about the golden age of Islam. Hence the name. And it's not necessarily religious intolerance at play here, but perhaps the lack of interest in playing with anything other than your home cultures and religions. Which is natural and nothing wrong with that.
But I digress, I don't want to steer this thread out of topic considering a mod even pre-preemptively warned us about it a few pages back.
It's clear what the core fanbase wants. You know it, I know it, CA knows it.
Actually I'm not that disappointed: this gives the M2TW mods (SS variations, Broken Crescent etc.) longer life. I don't believe the TW:3K would provide good tools to create big scale mods like TATW, EBII, 1648 or the Rise of three Kingdoms with the RTW/M2TW engine.
Here is a small info video I made about what we know about the game so far!
Is there actually a new engine for this game? Ive seen a few people claim this but haven't read anything official from CA stating they created a new engine for 3K.
to be honest, adding quests and rpg elements are good designs. instead of only items like in warhammer, the quest rewards can easily be factionwide bonuses, unlocking special units, hell, even an unique building chain. that also makes the players feel more involved in the game. special abilities on generals are fine. even in warhammer it was mostly morale or speed enhancers. if we take out warhammer magic.
judging from warhammer sales numbers, you don't matter :))) just kidding. 100% historically accurate = you are dreaming though. that is no longer a game. problem with rome II/attila was because a designer at CA decided the defend button needed to go to create chaos so players would have more micromanagement in battles. this choice caused alot of problems, one of which was the blobby mess you saw. it was why formed attack was patched in. if you have played warhammer I and II you would know this problem has been solve.
warhammer series had a huge engine update. ca might have upgraded the engine even more for the new game.
@thread ca just released a single cgi trailer, and negativity is up the wazoo :))) china will always be a hard sell. too many haters :) good luck to CA.
ps: I have always hated the first gunpower total war game because it introduced the hated, loathed firing cones for range units. it made sense for primitive gunpowder units, but 100% retarded for archers and horse archers.
Yes a big YAWN
More sword / spear / shield and bow combat all rapped up with Warhammer esq immortal heroes no doubt, and similar (read same) army structure / units. After the two worst TW games of all, Shogun / Shogun 2, we basically now have Shogun 3 after how many years wait?? Just to capture a market for the Chinese im sure.
China should have been included in the Attila TW game, not as a standalone.
Even Thrones of Britannia sounds more interesting than this, but TOB is a SAGA game thus a sideshow and acceptable as such, this is meant to be the next MAJOR historical title.....
Its seems CA refuse to acknowledge the missing 1600's and the 30yrs war...the true first world war and Europe's most destructive to date, massed pike and shot army's, or even a remake of the best TW game to date ETW, with the only worth while naval combat yet.
My greatest fear is that we will now get gunpowder as a sideshow SAGA game instead of a full Historical title! insistently my fav era is 'High Medieval' so im not just bias Gunpowder, but Gee we have only ever had one TW with gunpowder, ETW and that was how long ago!...NTW does not count as it was an add-on and vastly smaller in scope than ETW.
Like most disappointed,,and when it bombs CA will think there is no appetite for Historical titles anymore and spend less effort on such, rather than realising the game setting was the issue.
So disapointed, had really looked forward for a new historical title, and for me they choose the worst setting ever. Ancient china has no interest for me, what so ever. Also had hoped for something different than an new melee oriented game.
Thats more technical on the side of optimization, I believe we were both referring to gameplay mechanics within the engine upgrades. Does the melee combat still suffer from the same issues of Rome 2/ATW where they all just blob and none of the units have a mass characteristic in battle.
As far as technically optimizations go, well one would hope that the engine received various performance enhancing elements, ATW and Rome 2 were very very rough performance wise on decent PCs because they catered to the low spec consumers out there and it cratered high end users with really unfortunate bottlenecks.
that is very very different than what you were referring to. gameplay mechanics is not engine upgrades. engine upgrades =/= changing gameplay mechanics. I don't understand how you connect the two. the blob issue has been solved as far as I know. only time I have seen blobs are when both sides trying to defend/take a choke point like a fallen gate in a siege. which is very normal. and it doesn't slow down the game at all like the rome 2/attila blobs do. you can easily check warhammer battle videos on youtube to confirm this.
low performance on high end pcs was why they upgraded. it worked.
should watch some warhammer battles on youtube, would give some answers. the battles in warhammer is pretty epic :)
I connect the two because the engine used in Med 2 and Rome 1 were far superior for simulating melee battles. The Warscape engine is absolutely terrible for simulating melee conflicts because the units mesh through one another. The silly matched combat animations are straight out of Hollywood and whilst they may look entertaining at first, they really interfere with the combat mechanics as a whole. They don't hold any resemblance of a formation and thus blob into a giant ant mound of bodies, even in open field battles.
I've watched a bit of the Warhammer stuff but being its fantasy and my complete ignorance to the franchise/lore, I'm not sure what is really going on or what certain units are suppose to actually do. Usually a dragon or a giant came in and just destroyed everything in the videos I saw too.
Sooo.. Tekken:Total War??.. I think I'll pass again.. It seems like they're still trying to marry strategy/historical with fantasy. They might prove me wrong, but my first impression was that it looked like the hero was front and center of the game to wipe out half an army.. yawn. This isn't a "back to their roots" game. I'm a strategy gamer and I've played TW games from the start.. (almost exclusively.. aside from an occasional COD game). Yes I understand the game aren't 100% historical, and I wish they implemented certain aspect just like everyone else.
Like I said they may prove me wrong.
in my opinion I would've pre-ordered a crusade/based game.. I loved MTW I & II, and with today's graphics, it could've been epic
I don't understand the cries about this being a "fantasy game".
Yes, it's seemingly based on the Romance of the Three Kingdoms novel, but so what? The novel isn't fantasy, it's grounded in history, despite having fictitious story elements. In a game such as TW, you make your own history. So whether it's based on real history or the RotTK novel, it doesn't matter. As long the units and buildings look historically accurate, then it's fine.
As for Hero units, they will be perfectly fine if they followed Shogun 2's module, where the Hero units are hard to get and expensive, and you can only have one of them.
easy to find, search for empire lets plays. surrealbeliefs have really good warhammer lets plays. he actually talk about alot of the lore during his play throughs and voiced how he plays. try this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDoI...FI4GlefD9M744h you can skip forward to the battles, there are more in the playlist.
well that was because of matched combat. that was not because of game engine. and unit collision was never a problem in total war games. I think you are confused with some of the total war clones who never got unit collision like alot of those battle only clone games. you will be surprise how easily a dragon dies to just a single unit of AP range unit. hell even a mid tier spear with anti large can kill most dragons or huge monster types. how difficult is it to tell what a spear unit does? or an archer unit? cavalry unit? the only difference warhammer have with older tw games are monster units, magic, and flying units. the game also got great tooltips for the new stuff and vastly improved UI.
hehe, I hope CA does well with this game despite all the china haters :)
I'm not a china hater.. if it's historic and not fantasy.. then i'm in.. someone in a previous post added some unit card designs.. not sure if they're part of the game or he just created them cuz he was bored..lol.. but those were great had me intrigued.. If i even sniff a dragon somewhere ...I'm out..lol
With the emphasis on martial arts, I highly doubt we’ll see a departure from 1 v 1 combat animations.
Wow after all this time, CA releases a real-life TW title set in the non-Western hemisphere to be sure to please the historical grognard audience. And to be sure the first comments here are rife with negativity. Boo hoo the Shu bros in the trailer wear a historically inaccurate teal uniform instead of the vermillion red, what a bunch of fantasy garbage. Boo hoo, Han China is too mainstream for me, I wanted a new TW game set in 1880's West Virginia, detailing the epic struggle between the Hatfields and McCoys. Boo hoo I don't know what I want, but no matter what CA does I will complain incessantly.
To all the CA people who might for some reason happen upon this thread, don't worry, this is just our way of being tsundere. It's not like we actually want to play your games all day long or anything, baka.
The game doesn't look like there will be Warhammer like magical stuff. It simply looks like heroes will be an emphasis though, which is a glorified general from basically any standard Total War game.
Haha well to be honest, that's a pretty large difference for someone like me who's mostly familiar with Roman Legions ;)
But to your last point, that's good to hear. Honestly my main complaint over the last two historicals of R2 and ATW has been the streamlined campaign and the rough UI (R2 especially, online encyclopedia?!). The battles were a bit arcadey but easy mods replaced or improved a lot of the issues I had with the constant micro-ing of the vast unit abilities activate buttons.
If warhammer 1 and 2 have made spending time on the campaign more enjoyable and adding some depth back to it where I feel R2/ATW were lacking, it makes me feel better about the release of 3K. So long as they dont blend any of the fantasy elements from WH1&2 into their historical titles. I'd rather be fully immersed in the history of ancient China rather than see it glorified into some Dynasty Warriors esque gameplay.
ahhahaha
hell, even in warhammer, the non magic heroes/generals are quiet normal besides those quest reward gears. I honestly love how the general skills can improve the stats of the units. even a max out general can be killed with a late game AP melee unit. they aren't monsters that people make it out to be.
fyi, it is still online but it's speed has made great strides, very fast now. it is how ca collects data on us gamers. if you want slower battles, it is easy to do. use pfm and change unit morale, hp(make sure you also change ammunition # accordingly or you will make range units useless). the most important thing, the defend button is back. that solved alot of problems :)
probably for generals and heroes agents only. as they are a single unit :)
rotk have no dragons, but you will get units that is not real I am sure but not monster types.
China has so much interesting history to cover, and CA just had to pick the most fantasized, internal, and boring conflict imaginable.
CA isn't interested in innovating anymore, they picked a conflict "The Romance of the Three Kingdoms", which isn't even historically accurate in a lot of ways, that allows them to mirror Warhammer. More fantasy fighting rather than realism, more single units beating down on mass blocks, more of the same spear emphasis fighting.
Victoria: Total War set from 1830-1920 would have been an amazing time to show the East. Russo-Japanese War. Sino-Japanese War. Boxer Rebellions. Opium Wars. So much exciting fun history, but instead... fantasy.
Let's stop comparing Romance of the Three Kingdoms to Warhammer, please?
One is a romanticized retelling of historical events and the other is literal fantasy.
