That's actually incorrect. The term 'Byzantine' was occasionally used by several Eastern Roman authors, including Michael Psellos, Anna Komnene, and Niketas Choniates.
'Byzantine' is not a modern term. It was used by Eastern Roman author themselves.
I know, but it would be nice to consistently name the places by default.
Great mod! Two small things in regards to the Byzantines:
- The faction leader for an AD 1132 start should be John (Ioannes) II Komnenos. Likewise, his heir should be Alexios (his first son who...
Well, to be fair, Maurice never really got to lay the final smackdown - he greatly succeeded in beating the Persians with his model army, but never eliminated them completely. After his execution,...
Remember, this is a STATE document. The official name of the Empire was Basileia Rhomaion. That doesn't mean that there weren't other names that could be used. For example, people from the US in the...
No, it wasn't. It was an archaism that was used by Romaioi authors of the 11th and 12th Centuries. Still, my point stands: the term "Byzantine" was used by Byzantines themselves. Therefore, it is not...
I can invalidate everything you have said, once again, with my declaration that Anna Komnene and Michael Psellos (11th and 12th Century Romaioi writers) both used the term "Byzantine" and "Byzantium"...
Going to have to pipe in to say that anyone who argues that the term "Byzantium" or "Byzantine" was first used in the 16th Century is wrong. Go read Michael Psellos or Anna Komnene in the original...
There are two sources that cover the reign of Alexios I Komnenos. His daughter, Anna Komnene, and Ioannes Zonaras. Anna I have read extensively, Zonaras, not so much, because his work is obscure and...
In some cases, both. For example, the term Scholarii, referring to the Byzantine cataphract unit in SS, is not only latinized (or else would have been the proper transliteration Scholarioi), but it...
Would it be possible to work on some fixes for the Byzantines? Some of the names of the units could use some work.
In fact, I'd volunteer to do the honors myself.
Glass prior to AD 1000 was not as rare as you might think, at least in the East. The Byzantines were highly skilled in the fashioning of glassware, since the artisans and craftsmen of...
My game keeps crashing when I try to run battles. For example, whenever I try to run a custom battle (after selecting my army and clicking start), it gets to the loading screen, tries to load, and...
Lifthrasir - Great! I will work on finalizing it, and then send it over to you guys once I am done.
I guess the issue I have is that many of the other factions get seem to get their own indigenous spellings for locations, while others don't. In the linked picture for Byzantium, I see...
Do you guys have any use for new quotes? I have compiled a submod list of over 250 actual quotes from various Western, Byzantine, and Muslim primary sources and would be willing to donate them for...
Although I appreciate the effort made to use the Greek transliterations for Byzantine cities, I don't feel that it is necessary. Amongst modern Anglosphere Byzantinists, it is generally better to use...
I'd like to contribute to the Titanium mod by providing a personal mini-mod I've been working on recently. I've compiled a list of 200+ actual historical quotes from the Byzantine World, the Islamic...
I would offer up my services as a Byzantine consultant.
I just wanted to pop in to say that this isn't correct. The term "Byzantine" originated from within the Empire itself and it referred, first and foremost, to the Queen of Cities and the Imperial...
