Can't comment on your other reasons but the campaign selection screen CTD is common in all big mods.

The moddb link works fine, it's a standalone installer for RSIII v3.1.

A lot of people didn't have a problem with waiting 5 hours. Just take a nap, watch tv, walk your dog, play other games etc :)
