Shogun 1 and Medieval 1 had good maps because they were hand-made. Obviously thats possible if you have a limit of battlefield which was bound to the number of provinces. With later games which generated maps based on the armies postion of the campaign map thats obviously unique but also generic since they were often pretty empty and without landmarks.
