Thread: Disappointed about units formations

    Default Disappointed about units formations

I'm very disappointed that (at least) human and dwarfs units can't develop a proper battle formation against enemies... a proper "shield wall" or "square formation" or a simple phalanx ? i know there is the "shield wall" ability, but you can see that units don't move themselves so as to form a proper shield wall, they just stay in the same formation... I would have liked to see a shield wall like that from the dwarfs in "The Hobbit - The battle of the five armies", that was a very cool shield wall/phalanx, or at least something similar on that. Orcs and vampire counts must not have these formations for obvious reasons...

Yeah, I know what you mean.

Kind of weird that they didn't at the very least include loose formation. Then the Orcs might actually have a chance against Dwarfen artillery

Long story short, AI cannot handle special unit formation.

    "AI can't handle formations."

    "AI can't handle trading regions."

"AI can't handle armies without generals."

    "AI can't handle building roads."

    "AI can't handle naval invasions."

What are they going to take away next? Real time battles? The entire economy? I would rather the AI be able to use them well, but even if they couldn't, at least let the player use them. They look so much better.

IMHO AI can handle various terrain pretty well: it knows the principle of occupying high ground and use forest to mask its movement. And no, like 50% of my battles are on mountainous terrain, too much for my liking honestly.

Attila had pretty good AI formation usage. Maybe nothing with grand plan in mind, but it was able to use them when it was supposed to do so.

One of the reasons why I'm hesitant to buy TW Warhammer, and dissappointed as well knowing that all over these years TW games still lacks authentic/proper battle formations. I'd really wish we could see some authentic formations such as these in CA's next TW title:

    Interlocking Shields

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    Overhand Hoplite Phalanx

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    Tightly Compressed Mobile Testudo

I'm not quite sure what this formation is (somebody know? kinda like a proper defensive testudo maybe?), But I'd really like to see this one in the next Roman era game.

The last roman formation is the classic "fulcum" "repel cavalry"...
