Israelis leave sleeping soldier behind in Gaza

Officials and media say Israeli soldiers keen to return from a Gaza mission left behind a comrade who had fallen asleep and then took more than an hour to realise he was missing.

The soldier from the elite Golani infantry regiment was taking part in an incursion into the Gaza Strip last week, the Jerusalem Post reported.

The exhausted soldier was at the rear of his unit and fell asleep when the troops paused during their march out of the territory.

When a commander conducted a head count other soldiers keen to get back into Israel after the mission answered in his place, the Haaretz daily said. The unit then marched out of Gaza, leaving him behind.

The mishap was discovered more than an hour later back at base in Israel.

By then, the missing man had woken up to find himself abandoned, so he started firing tracer bullets into the air to signal his position.

He was later retrieved and returned to base unharmed.

The army has begun an investigation into the incident, which it viewed as "very severe", a military source said.

The Jerusalem Post said five Palestinian gunmen were killed during the mission

That is disgraceful behaviour from a so-called "elite" unit. Knowingly leaving a comrade behind.

And what does this do for unit morale, knowing that you may be intentionally left for dead by your comrades?

Those who answered the count in this man's place should be brought to account, and severely. Possibly dropped into Gaza naked and unarmed by parachute with "I hate Islam and the Prophet" tattooed on their foreheads and buttocks.

When a comrade is asleep, wake him up. Kick him a bit. Never answer for him and leave him behind. Even if they didn't know he was asleep, every soldier must answer for himself and himself only. Organization is key in the military and there can't be idiots ruining it.

In the hury they probably just forgot about him, and the guy that answered for him probably answerd for some other soldiers aswell to hury things up.

Which army are you going into? Israel's army is known world-wide as excellent; this incident is certainly an exception to the rule. And I am sure the unit involved has had its arse kicked for soiling the image of the nation over this incident, and that it won't happen again in the short to mid-term. Guaranteed heads would roll with such negative publicity.

Golani is regular infantry unit, any infantry in Israel is elite.
