...no they didn't.
One could argue they couldn't win right from the start seeing as there was no way to force the US in to submisson; the most the Germans ever could have done I feel would have been force the war in to a stalemate.
Unless you would mind explaining how Germany could have won in '42
Simple, they just retreated to the defensive lines like Hitler's generals suggested, take time to resupply, rearm, and reorganize their forces, then several months later launch a renewed counteroffensive. Being that close to Moscow, if they timed it right, they could stand a chance to break through and take it.
EDIT: Not likely, but completely possible.

But so would germany, if Russia was going to invade Germany, then Germany would have had ample time to prepare. Soviet spies and border gaurds noticed the germans ammasing soldiers and equipment on the border, the Germans began fly overs to scout the border, and German personel all left the USSR, (trade vessles, contracted workers, diplomats, etc.). The only reason that the soviets weren't prepared is because Stalin refused to believe it, and was willing to sacrifice huge amounts of materials and stuff to appease Germany and keep the agreement in tact, he even stepped up shipments of materials right before the war to try and show that the pact with the USSR was a good thing.
hitler would never have done the same thing, if the Soviets started a build up of troops on the border (of any significant size, forget about the number the germans had on the border) he would have immediatly moved his army to the border and probably would have counter invaded just because of his contempt for the Russians. Combine that with your mythical German technology achievements and waiting until the Soviets invaded would have been germanys best option.

...what?
After 1941, Germany only had the power to launch an offensive on either the north, centre or south of the Eastern Front. How would having to concentrate their forces in one part of the front while leaving the others weakened help them win the war? All it would do is end up in them stretching themselves thin, the Soviets taking advantage of this and simply attacking the salient on its flanks and encircling the troops caught up in the offensive (e.g. Stalingrad).
This thread is very entertaining. Since I believe in justice and equality, I want to see Notorious' opponents win. But I would like to see both sides of the argument.

...whut?
Germany, the nation with a constant manpower shortage can just advance along the entire front and "push them back a bit"?
There was a reason the Germans used Blitzkrieg, that reason being they were always up against either even or greater odds and needed something to balance things out - forming an armoured fist and pushing rapidly in to enemy territory and overturning the enemy's defences while causing chaos in their logistics/supply areas is what made the Germans so successful, more so when they divided their armour in half so that the two rapidly advancing formations could meet "in the middle" so that they could trap large quantities of infantry, vehicles and guns in large pockets.
Honestly Fred, you should try to understand the situation Germany was in in the years prior and during WW2 before saying "they should have done things X, Y and Z" because otherwise it comes across like you have no idea what you're talking about.
